About This Game
Cut one plain square into just seven pieces, and suddenly you can build almost anything β a sailing boat, a strutting swan, a sneaky fox, or a cozy little house. That old, clever trick is called Tangram, and it's one of the oldest shape puzzles in the whole world, now living right here on KidWorld as a fun, shape-shifting brain game for kids! Our Tangram puzzle has already been played more than 700,000 times, and thousands of happy players have handed it a full five twinkling stars. That's a whole lot of puzzle-loving kids out there!
πΊ What Is Tangram, Exactly?
Tangram is an ancient puzzle that started in China hundreds of years ago, and people are still playing it today because it's just that clever. It starts with one big square, sliced into exactly 7 flat shapes called "tans." Mix and match all 7 the right way, and you can build hundreds of different pictures β animals, buildings, boats, even people! On KidWorld, your job each round is to drag, rotate, and sometimes flip all 7 pieces onto a picture outline until every single piece clicks into its perfect spot. Here's the full toolbox you get to play with:
2 large triangles β the biggest pieces, and exact identical twins.
1 medium triangle β a in-between size, all on its own.
2 small triangles β the tiniest pieces, also exact identical twins.
1 square β the only piece with four equal sides.
1 parallelogram β a slanted, tilted shape, and the only piece in the whole set without a mirror-image twin, which is why it's the only one you can flip!
Only 7 pieces, but an almost endless number of pictures β that's the magic of Tangram.
πΉοΈ How to Play on KidWorld
Pick your level: Choose Toddlers, Preschool, Elementary, or Tweens when the game opens. KidWorld remembers your favorite level for you, just like it does in other KidWorld games.

Meet your picture: One silhouette is chosen at random from KidWorld's puzzle catalog β House, Boat, Fish, Swan, Cat, Rabbit, Fox, Turtle, or Tent β and appears as an outline on the board, with all 7 colorful pieces waiting for you in the tray below.
Tap a piece to select it. It lights up so you know exactly which one you're moving.
Drag it onto the board and drop it near the spot where you think it belongs.

Tap β» Rotate to spin your selected piece 45Β° at a time until it's angled just right.
Tap β Flip whenever the parallelogram piece looks mirror-backwards β it's the only piece that ever needs flipping.
Watch it snap! Get a piece close enough to its correct spot, angle, and (if needed) flip, and it locks into place with a happy little sound. Once a piece is placed, it's locked in safe and can't be bumped out again.
Finish the picture: Snap all 7 pieces into place and you've solved it! Every placed piece earns points, plus a bonus the moment the whole picture is complete, and your score turns into stars β for your KidWorld profile.
Stuck, or want a do-over? Tap π Reset Picture to start the same puzzle fresh, or Change Level any time to jump back to the level picker. Handy tools: tap the fullscreen button above the game to make the board bigger and easier to tap on a tablet, use the reload button any time you want a brand-new puzzle to appear, and tap the speaker button to mute or unmute the background music whenever you like.
π§ Secrets to Solving Any Tangram Picture
Tangram isn't about guessing where a piece might go β it's about looking closely and thinking like a shape detective. Here's how real Tangram solvers crack any picture, big or small:
Start with the giants. Place the two large triangles first. Since they're the biggest pieces, they usually form the main body of the picture and give you a solid frame to build the rest around.
Hunt for square corners. If part of the outline has a perfectly straight, boxy corner, that's often exactly where the square piece belongs.
Match the edges, not just the space. In a real Tangram picture, every edge of one piece lines up exactly with an edge of its neighbor β same length touching same length, with no gaps and no overlaps. Look for a piece whose edge length seems to match the gap you're trying to fill.
Suspect the parallelogram when things look "backwards." If a slanted piece almost fits but seems mirrored the wrong way, don't force it β tap Flip and try again.
Save the small triangles for last. The two identical small triangles are perfect for finishing off pointy little details β an ear, a tail, a beak β once the bigger pieces are already down.
Trust the click of the Rotate button. Since KidWorld turns pieces in neat 45Β° steps, you never have to guess an angle by eye β just keep tapping Rotate and the piece will click into its correct spot the moment it's right.
𧩠Quick Shape Riddles
Here are 5 fun shape riddles that use the same kind of thinking you'll use inside the real game. Can you figure them out before checking the answer?
A Tangram set has 7 pieces, but two of them are exact twins in one shape, and two more are exact twins in another shape. How many truly different shapes are actually in the set? (Answer: 5 β large triangle, medium triangle, small triangle, square, and parallelogram β even though there are 7 pieces total, since the 2 large triangles match each other and the 2 small triangles match each other.)
Which single piece in the whole set is the only one that ever needs to be flipped over instead of just rotated? (Answer: the parallelogram β it's the only piece without a mirror-image twin shape.)
If you place the two identical small triangles edge to edge along their longest side, what brand-new shape do they build together? (Answer: a perfect little square β the exact same shape as the SQ piece!)
Five of the seven pieces each have one perfectly square, 90Β° corner somewhere on them. Which single piece is the only one with no square corner at all? (Answer: the parallelogram β every one of its corners is slanted, not square.)
KidWorld picks a brand-new picture at random from 9 possibilities every time you play. Can you name three animals hiding among them? (Answer: any three of Cat, Rabbit, Fox, Swan, Turtle, or Fish β Boat, House, and Tent are the non-animal pictures!)
π― Tangram for Every Age
What makes KidWorld's Tangram so special is that the exact same 7 pieces and 9 pictures can feel like gentle shape-matching for a toddler or a genuine head-scratcher for a tween β the game simply changes how much help it gives you:
Tangram for toddlers (around ages 2 to 4): every piece starts already turned to its correct angle, and a soft, color-matched dashed outline shows exactly where each piece belongs and what color it should be β like a friendly shape sorter. Little ones just slide each piece into its glowing spot, no rotating needed at all.
Tangram for preschool (around ages 4 to 6): the same helpful colorful outlines are still there, but now pieces start facing a random direction, so kids get to practice tapping Rotate (and sometimes Flip) themselves, while still having the color guide to check their work against.
Tangram for elementary (around ages 6 to 10): the training wheels come off! The outline turns into one plain gray silhouette with no color hints, so kids have to work out which piece goes where using shape and size alone β real problem-solving, with a little extra room for a not-quite-perfect fit.
Tangram for tweens (around ages 10 to 12): the true classic challenge β a plain gray outline and the snuggest snap tolerance of all, just like a real wooden Tangram set. Every piece has to land almost exactly right before it locks in, which makes finishing a picture feel like a genuine achievement.
Because the pieces, the pictures, and the toolbox stay exactly the same at every level, one child can start on Toddlers today sliding shapes into glowing outlines, and grow all the way up to solving a plain gray Tweens silhouette from scratch β all in the very same game.
π Why Tangram Is Such a Wonderful Fit for Kids
A handful of flat shapes might look simple, but Tangram quietly gives a kid's brain a wonderful workout every single round:
Spatial thinking. Figuring out how a shape needs to turn or flip before it even fits builds the same mental-rotation skill used in geometry, map-reading, and even packing a backpack neatly.
Patience and persistence. Pieces don't drop into place by luck β kids learn to try a spot, notice it's not quite right, and adjust, which is exactly how real problem-solvers work through anything tricky.
Creative imagination. The very same 7 flat shapes can become a swan, a fox, or a house β a lovely reminder that a few simple building blocks can turn into almost anything with a little imagination.
Fine motor control and focus. Dragging, rotating, and lining up small shapes precisely takes real hand-eye coordination, sharpened a little more with every puzzle.
Calm, can't-lose fun. There's no timer chasing you and no way to truly fail β a stuck piece just means try a different angle, and Reset Picture is always one tap away. That makes Tangram a wonderfully calm kind of screen time.
Simple enough for a toddler to enjoy sliding shapes into glowing outlines, yet challenging enough to make a tween feel genuinely proud of a finished picture β that's exactly why this quiet, centuries-old square-cutting puzzle still feels so at home as a Tangram game for kids on KidWorld today.
