Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains what information the KidWorld.org website and the KidWorld app for Android collect, how it is used, who it is shared with, and the choices available to families. KidWorld is made for children, so we try to collect as little as possible. In this policy, the "Site" means the website, and the "app" means the Android app. The app works differently from the website in several ways, which are described in "The KidWorld App for Android" below.

The Short Version

  • Every game can be played without an account and without giving any personal information.
  • The website shows ads to keep the games free. The ads come from Google, and every ad request is tagged as child-directed, so ads are not personalized and are not based on what a child does on this site or other sites.
  • The website uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which games are played, with its advertising features turned off.
  • The app has no ads, no analytics, no accounts, and no comments. Stars and scores in the app are kept on the device.
  • We never sell personal information.
  • A parent or guardian can ask us to see or delete a child's information at any time.

Information We Collect

Accounts (optional, website only). When an account is created, we collect a username, an email address, an optional display name, and a password, which is stored only in encrypted (hashed) form. If sign-in happens through Google, we receive basic profile information from Google, such as a name and email address. We ask that accounts for children under 13 be created by a parent or guardian, or with their permission, using the parent's email address.

Game progress. For signed-in players, we store best scores, play counts, stars, streaks, achievements, and the chosen age level. For guests, scores and game progress are saved only in the browser's local storage on that device. In the app, they are saved only on the device.

Comments and ratings. If a comment is submitted on a game page, we store the name provided, the comment text, and the submitter's IP address. If a star rating is submitted, we store the rating and the submitter's IP address. This applies whether or not the submitter is signed in. The app does not show or accept comments.

Guest token. Guests are identified only by a random token stored in the browser's local storage (or, in the app, on the device), used to prevent the same guest from rating a game more than once and to save guest scores. This token is not linked to any personal information.

Play counts. When a game is finished, the website and the app tell our server which game was played, so we can show how popular each game is. This count is not linked to the player.

Server logs. Like most websites, our server keeps standard logs of the requests it receives, from both the website and the app: the IP address, the browser or app version, the page or file requested, and the time. We use them to keep the Site running, fix errors, and protect it from abuse, and we keep them only as long as needed for those purposes.

Information collected by our partners (website only). When the website is visited, Google's advertising and analytics services receive technical information such as the browser and device type, the pages visited, the IP address and an approximate location based on it, and identifiers stored in cookies. See "Advertising" and "Analytics" below.

Search suggestions. On the website, as text is typed into the search box, it is sent to Google's search suggestion service so that suggested searches can be shown. In the app, search text is sent only to KidWorld's own server, which suggests matching game titles.

How We Use Information

We use the information above to operate the Site and the app: to let people sign in, save game progress, award stars and achievements, send password reset emails when requested, moderate comments, count plays and ratings, and prevent abuse (such as repeated or automated submissions). We use analytics reports to understand which games are played and what to improve. We do not use account information, comments, or ratings for advertising, and we do not build marketing profiles of anyone.

The KidWorld App for Android

The app shows KidWorld's games and pages, and loads them from KidWorld.org. It is built to collect less than the website:

  • No ads and no analytics. The app contains no advertising or analytics code, does not use the device's advertising ID, and loads no Google Analytics or Google AdSense, even inside the games.
  • No accounts. There is no sign-in, and the app never asks for a name, email address, or any other personal information.
  • Progress stays on the device. Stars, the daily streak, best scores, the games played most recently, and the ratings given are saved only on the device. They are not sent to us, and they are deleted when the app is uninstalled or its data is cleared.
  • Ratings. When a star rating is given in the app, the app sends the game, the rating, and a random token created when the app was first opened, so the same device can't rate a game twice. Our server stores these with the device's IP address, as for ratings on the website. The token is not linked to any person or account.
  • Play counts. When a game is finished, the app tells our server which game was played, for the play counts described above. Nothing else about the player is sent.
  • Search. Search text is sent to KidWorld's server to find matching games. It is not sent to Google or anyone else, and we do not store it apart from the server logs.
  • No comments, leaderboards, or social links. The app does not show or accept comments, does not show other players' names, and has no links or share buttons for Facebook, X, LinkedIn, or other social networks.
  • Quiz games and age levels. Some games check answers with our server and remember the chosen age level using an essential cookie from KidWorld.org, stored in the app.
  • Read-aloud. Games that read text aloud use the text-to-speech engine installed on the device.
  • Saving a drawing. When a drawing is saved, the app opens the device's own share menu, and the person using the device chooses where it goes. We do not receive the drawing.
  • Offline play. Games that have been played once are kept on the device so they can open without an internet connection.
  • Permissions. The app asks only for internet access. It does not use the camera, microphone, location, contacts, or photos.

Like every app distributed on Google Play, Google may give us aggregated statistics about installs and crashes. Google's privacy policy covers what Google Play itself collects.

Advertising (website only)

The KidWorld website shows ads served by Google AdSense. Ads are how we keep every game free to play, with no subscription and no in-game purchases. We do not work with any other ad network. The app shows no ads.

Ads on KidWorld are child-directed. We tag every ad request for child-directed treatment under the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). For tagged requests, Google turns off interest-based (personalized) advertising and remarketing, so the ads shown are chosen from the content of the page, not from a visitor's past activity on this site or other sites. Google may still use cookies or similar technologies for purposes such as limiting how often an ad is shown, measuring ads, and detecting fraud.

We also limit ads to ones suitable for a general audience, and we place them away from the game area so children don't tap them by accident. We do not use pop-up or full-screen ads, and we never place ads inside or on top of a game.

In general, across the web, third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to a website or other websites, and Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads based on visits to sites on the Internet. On KidWorld, child-directed treatment turns this personalization off. Analytics (website only)

We use Google Analytics to understand how the website is used, such as how many people visit, which games are played, and which pages have errors. Google Analytics uses cookies and receives the technical information described above. We have turned off Google Analytics' advertising features (Google signals and ad personalization), and analytics data is not used to target ads. Google Analytics does not store IP addresses. To stop Google Analytics from collecting data in your browser, you can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on. The app does not use Google Analytics.

Cookies and Local Storage

  • Essential cookies keep users signed in, remember the current session and age level, and protect forms from misuse. The Site does not work properly without them.
  • A recently played cookie from KidWorld lists the games played most recently on that browser, so the home page can show them under "Play Again". It holds only game names, is kept for one year, and is not shared with advertisers.
  • Local storage saves guest scores, the guest token, sound and music settings, and the progress of some games (such as a garden or a village being built) on your device. It stays on the device and is not shared with advertisers.
  • Analytics cookies from Google Analytics, described above (website only).
  • Advertising cookies from Google, described above (website only).

The app uses only essential cookies and local storage.

Visitors to the website in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland are asked for consent before advertising and analytics cookies are used, through a consent message provided by Google. Visitors in those regions can change their choices at any time with the "Privacy and cookie settings" link that Google shows on the page for them. Cookies and local storage can also be deleted in your browser settings at any time; doing so also erases guest progress saved on that device.

Sharing of Information

We never sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising. Information is shared only with service providers that help run the Site, and only as needed:

  • Google, for advertising (Google AdSense), analytics (Google Analytics), sign-in with Google, search suggestions, and delivering password reset emails, all on the website only, and for distributing the app through Google Play.
  • Content delivery networks (esm.sh and jsDelivr), which deliver the 3D graphics library that some games use, on the website and in the app. Like any server that delivers a file, they receive the IP address and browser information of the device downloading it.
  • Our hosting provider, which stores the Site's data on our behalf.

We may also disclose information if required by law, or if needed to protect the safety of our users or the Site.

The Facebook, X (Twitter), and LinkedIn share buttons on the website are plain links. Nothing is loaded from or sent to those services unless one of the buttons is clicked. The app has no such buttons.

Children's Privacy

KidWorld is made for children and is intended to be used with the involvement of a parent or guardian. We collect only what is needed to save game progress, run accounts, count plays and ratings, and moderate comments, and no game asks a child for personal information. Every game can be played without an account.

Because every ad request is tagged as child-directed, no interest-based advertising or remarketing is shown to anyone on the KidWorld website, child or adult. The app shows no ads at all.

Children should not include their real full name, address, school, photos, or other personal details in a comment or in the comment's name field. Comments are reviewed before they appear, and we do not publish comments that contain personal information.

A parent or guardian may at any time review the information we hold about their child, ask us to delete it, or ask us to stop collecting it, by emailing admin@kidworld.org. We will check that a request comes from the child's parent or guardian before acting on it.

Data Retention and Security

  • Account information and saved progress are kept while the account exists. When an account is deleted, or a parent or guardian asks us to delete a child's account, we remove it and its saved progress within 30 days. Accounts that are inactive for a long time may also be removed.
  • Comments and ratings, and the IP addresses stored with them, are kept while the comment or rating remains on the Site, for moderation and abuse prevention. Comments that are not approved are deleted. A comment can be removed on request at any time.
  • Server logs are kept only as long as needed to run and protect the Site, and are then deleted.
  • Password reset links expire automatically after a short time.
  • Google Analytics data is kept for the period set in our Google Analytics account, which is no longer than 14 months.
  • Data in local storage, and data the app saves on the device, stays on the device until it is cleared or the app is uninstalled.

Passwords are stored using industry-standard one-way encryption (hashing) and are never kept in plain text. The website and the app connect to our server only over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, and only site administrators can see email addresses, IP addresses, and comments awaiting review. No method of storage or transmission is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect the information we hold.

Your Choices and Rights

You, or a parent or guardian, may at any time ask to see, correct, or delete account information, or to have a submitted comment removed, by contacting us. Deleting an account also removes its saved scores and progress. You can also:

  • play every game as a guest, without giving any personal information;
  • in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, change cookie choices on the website with the "Privacy and cookie settings" link;
  • clear cookies and local storage in your browser;
  • delete everything the app has saved on a device by clearing the app's data in the device's settings, or by uninstalling the app; or
  • install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on.

Ratings given in the app are linked only to a random token, not to a person, so we usually cannot tell which ratings came from a particular child. If you want them removed, email us and we will help as far as we can.

Depending on where you live, you may have further rights under local law (such as the GDPR in Europe, or state privacy laws in the United States), including the right to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your information, and to object to or restrict how it is used. To make a request, email us and we will respond within the time required by law.

Changes to This Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated as the Site, the app, or the law changes. The "Last updated" date at the top shows when it last changed. If we make a significant change to how children's information is handled, we will post a notice on the Site before the change takes effect.
